Your letter
16 October 2026 Dear Doctor, Re: [Your full name] Request for referral to [Preferred hospital] — Orthopaedics I am waiting for an appointment in Orthopaedics. Having compared published NHS waiting times, I would like to ask whether my referral can be made to [Preferred hospital], where the published wait is shorter. I understand that the NHS Constitution gives patients the right to choose which provider they are referred to for a first outpatient appointment, and that eligible providers can be selected through the NHS e-Referral Service. I would be grateful if you could confirm whether this is possible in my case. I appreciate that my circumstances may affect what is possible, and I am happy to discuss this at an appointment if that would be easier. I would be grateful for your advice either way. Thank you for your help. Yours sincerely, [Your full name]
If your GP says no
The letter is the easy part
Most people who get turned down are turned down verbally, in the room, with one of about five standard objections. The Switch Pack is what happens next.
- Word-for-word answers to the objections GPs actually give
- How to escalate to your ICB if you are refused
- The plain-English guide to your rights under the NHS Constitution
- The NHS-commissioned independent provider list, with what each one treats
- 90 days of weekly wait-time alerts for your specialty
This letter is a template, not medical or legal advice. Whether a referral can be moved depends on your circumstances and where you are on your pathway. Always discuss changes to your care with your GP.
